Program OverviewBSc program of Materials Science & Engineering at Jimma University is the first comprehensive undegraduate program of this discipline in Ethiopia.
Materials Scientists and Engineers are involved in every aspect of technology, ranging from the design of materials appropriate for use in integrated circuits and biological applications, through to those materials needed for energy generation (both conventional energy sources and green sources), and for building bridges, roads and buildings.
Materials Scientists and Engineers enjoy some of the highest starting salaries of any undergraduate engineering program. The objectives of the undergraduate program in MSE are to educate graduates who:know the fundamental science and engineering principles relevant to materials understand the relationship between nano/microstructure, characterization, properties and processing and design of materialshave the experimental and computational skills for a professional career or graduate study in materialspossess a knowledge of the significance of research, the value of continued learning and environmental/social issues surrounding materialsare able to communicate effectively, to work in teams and to assume positions as leaders.
The program objective includes:
Foundations Develop a solid foundation in the fundamentals, methods and tools of the field, and be prepared to apply it to the practice of materials science and engineering through exposure to and mastery of state-of-the-art methods of materials design, processing, analysis, modeling and computation.
Professional Balance Be able to creatively balance practical and industrial needs with materials science and engineering fundamentals in addressing engineering problems encountered in engineered systems.
Teamwork/Leadership Be able to communicate and work in teams and be prepared to assume positions of leadership in materials science and engineering.
Engineered Systems Understand that materials are enabling and integral to the design and fabrication of engineered systems that serve society and the larger world.
